Let’s introduce a new concept to the YouTube meta that doesn’t yet have a name… 🔻Negative Outliers🔻 This lets you save time, use objective evidence to predict video performance in advance, and save your money for the bangers. Concise 🧵 since we don’t have much time:
If a positive outlier is one where a video gets more views than its surrounding videos for a channel (let’s say 3-5x more views)… Then a negative outlier is one that significantly underperforms. ‼️ These are extremely useful in terms of information.
When we’re studying positive outliers, we try to understand why videos do well. Concept, title/thumbnail, script/storytelling/editing. So negative outliers is studying all the same things, but for bad videos, to try to come up with hypotheses as to why videos underperformed.
The key things are: - keep an open mind - generate hypotheses over time - note them down - recognise consistent patterns within a niche - supply-demand is dynamic, therefore outliers (positive and negative) are dynamic - systematically think through every factor regularly
Hope this quick thread is helpful! If so, feel free to like the top comment. What would you add? If you’re wanting to grow your channel, I made this 5-day email course called YouTube Storytelling Primer. It’s about ideas, hooks, titles, thumbnails, and storytelling. One last note! If you have less than fifty videos worth of experience, I probably wouldn’t as much about this, because it’s a better use of time to develop the skill of making videos…by just publishing/improving on each video. Creation and analysis are two separate skills.
