By far one of the most common problems in YouTube editing that both new and surprisingly experienced editors get wrong, is too much repetition. The reason it’s so hard to be aware of is because it’s not as simple as “delete a specific word”, because it’s not just words: Repetition should be considered in every abstraction. Basically, if you show the same magic trick 3 times, it becomes stale. This includes: - whole videos - scripting - words - scripting - phrase patterns - presentation — in the context of a single video - rhythm - music - visuals - emotion - individual objects in a scene - conflicts and their flavours To *some* degree, repetition is important in the sense that viewers that like your channel precisely because you’re giving them something that they expect…but paradoxically, to keep them interested, you have to give them something they don’t expect. 🌱 Satisfaction is a fine balance between predictability and subversion. Interestingly enough, humor falls into the same category. Something that’s utterly random isn’t that funny. Something that’s too predictable isn’t that funny. The way that humor tickles our brain is like the way that *everything that hits that sweet spot* creates those kinds of satisfying sparks there. Unless one is acutely aware of it, the overwhelming majority of people won’t notice it until it’s way overdone, *but* people will feel it as the subjective feeling of boredom. This tweet needs to end right here, for example.
The editing mistake that literally almost everybody makes, no matter how good you are or how long you’ve been editing for: repetition and its abstract variants.
