The YouTube Course ecosystem (Feb 2024)

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗧𝘂𝗯𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 The YouTube education landscape continues to grow and evolve. But how do you know if a YouTube course is right for you? I’ve screenshotted some curriculums for you to see, as well as my personal experience doing a bunch for my own reasons. 🧵/13

1. @mariojoos - Retention Accelerator. This is the single most advanced course on YouTube retention specifically, and one of my personal favourites that I’ve done. In case you’re unaware, Mario was partially responsible for some of the highest view videos on the platform. He’s most well known for his work with the MrBeast team, but of course he’s worked with many other channels Mario goes through interpretation of metrics, structures, how to let content appeal broadly. It’s advanced though, so it would be more useful specifically to those who have at the barest minimum 10 videos (personally speaking). The more context you have in your head, the more the principles feel practical. Also: Mario has just started his own YouTube channel, so recommend that as well.

2. @PaddyG96 - YouTube Channel Accelerator. You’ve likely heard of Paddy, but if not, he’s probably the most well-known strategist in the YouTube space. My understanding is that this particular accelerator is broad in scope. It’s suitable for serious creators of all kinds.

3. My own! ‘YouTube Storytelling: Beyond Retention’ is a course that I continue to actively contribute to. https://t.co/2TduzhjVrT It goes super hardcore on storytelling for YouTube. Although made with beginners in mind, the advanced principles are probably more useful for 20K+ sub channels at a minimum, especially because they can get fairly abstract.

5. @nathanieldrew_’s Frame X Frame. Nathaniel’s YouTube storytelling is extremely good, and he always comes through with an authentic style and voice. Doing this course right now. There is an insane amount of information packed in there, so it’s very well worth the cost, and I really like it. Specifically, it’s on: 1. Shooting, 2. Editing, 3. Animating.

6. @justinmooretfam’s Brand Deal Wizard. Justin is the most well-known strategist in the space when it comes to YouTube sponsorships and negotiations. I’ve not personally done this course yet, but it is definitely on my list of things to do eventually.

7. @noahmorris’s NexLev. If you’re interested in YouTube automation specifically, you’ve likely heard of Noah, but not everyone necessarily knows that he made a course. Haven’t done it yet, but another one on my list.

8. @Ed_FilmBooth’s Edutainers. Haven’t done this one, but has really good reviews and aimed at the very specific audience of people who are using YouTube as an education platform. Typically this is where you have an online business of some kind, and you need traffic.

9. @AliAbdaal’s Part Time YouTuber Academy. This was the very first YouTube course I ever did, back somewhere around 2021. It’s had many iterations since then. Really good for beginners and also for people who want to think about improving YouTube systems. My affiliate link: https://t.co/4nskwkfjll

10. @creatornow_ . Decent number of really good talks. It’s also the only way to access @HHillierSmith’s editing course I believe.

11. @theKevinShen’s Dream Studio course. He’s superb at helping YouTubers perfect their recording setup, backgrounds, and studios. Kevin has a super good eye for design there. Also one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet.

12. @ColinandSamir’s Creator Startup. This is a very new course I haven’t done yet, which is a 30 day live cohort aimed at professional creators who want to grow brand partnerships.

13. There are other courses that I haven’t done and don’t know much about, but to mention them here since they would be worthwhile knowing about: - @robertoblake’s Awesome Creator Academy. A full stack course that talks about growing a YouTube channel and then running as business from it. - @derraleves’s Channel Jumpstart. My understanding is that it’s a kind of accelerator. He also has previous Vidsummit recordings online, and those talks are often really valuable. - @jayclouse’s Creator Labs. Don’t know anything about this one as somehow we haven’t really crossed paths much, but I’ve heard this one is popular. - @wono_strategy doesn’t have a course and as far as I know doesn’t intend to make one, but he’s certainly got a lot of thought-provoking ideas that I think are worth at least being aware of, and does have credible traction with his own channels. His site is Investor’s Kitchen and he has a private newsletter/Discord. If there’s other courses I’m unaware of though, I promise it’s more my own ignorance than malice, as I’ve tried to included the ones I knew about here.

I’m cooking up a new website right now, so look forward to that. Lastly: do you actually need a course for YouTube? The real answer is that, it depends. Most people could become successful on YouTube without a course, but realistically there is a huge amount of increasing knowledge that may be difficult to catch up to without some help. This can come from YouTuber friends, from Discord groups, or through intense analysis. The reason it can be difficult without external help is not necessarily because each individual piece of knowledge is difficult in itself. After all, complexity is just a lot of simple things that interact with each other. The difficulty actually comes from not knowing the right questions to ask or think about…and then, even if you *do* have the right questions, simply not having the time or resources to look into it properly because there’s so much other stuff you’re already thinking about production-wise. So basically, courses are the equivalent of a domestic airplane vs. walking without a map. You can technically walk your way to most destinations…it would just take a while, and you might not even be heading in the right direction. So courses are just shortcuts for the right creators, and useful for blind spots in others. After all, no-one can improve at something they’re not thinking about.
